Choosing the Right Snack

I wanted to touch base with on eating snacks. If you have an excellent diet you can really kind of torpedo it by not eating the proper snacks. When you have the inclination for a snack, eating a candy bar or something along those lines can be a real killer when it comes to being healthy.

One thing that many people turn to for healthy snacks is nuts. The is a fine alternative with one exception: Peanuts. Peanuts have many problems with them unlike most nuts. They are very high in omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-6 fatty acids are particularly bad for you and case quite a bit of inflammation in your body. If you read any of my other blogs you are probably already aware of this as I talk quite frequently about it. Another problem with peanuts is that they are grown underground and really are not a nut at all. This can lead in some cases to have them having funguses on them that are not beneficial to the body.

When choosing which nuts to eat be sure to read the label. Many manufacturers use cottonseed oil as an oil to roast their nuts in. Cottonseed oil is extremely inexpensive for manufacturers, however extremely detrimental to the human body. Cotton seeds were never meant to be consumed. The cottonseed oil, however, is edible, if you are not concerned about your health. Cottonseed oil is an oil that is probably the highest in omega-6 fatty acids and is really horrible for you. Read the label and if they use cottonseed oil or any other type of grain oil to roast their nuts in, you should probably avoid them. One researcher stated that he felt that cottonseed oil was so high in omega-6 fatty acids that it should be considered cancer-causing.

Some really great alternatives for snacks include nuts such as walnuts, which are very high in omega-3 fatty acids. Other alternatives would include almonds, cashews, or macadamia nuts. Simply eating something along the lines of fruit or nuts is a far better for you than having a candy bar or some other sweet snack. So avoid sweets, peanuts, and cottonseed oil when you are looking at the snack aisle in the grocery store to satisfy your cravings.
