Improving your immune system
...Improving your immune system.
Millions of people face getting sidelined or are made miserable by colds, flu’s and generally just feeling bad. Do you know (or are one of those) who seem to catch every little bug that comes along. Building your body’s immune system to help prevent things before they effect your health is a great place to start. But how do you build your immune system? Where is the immune muscle?
Believe it or not, your immune muscle is in your gut. Now, I’m not talking about sit-ups. I am talking about the inside of your intestines. Having a healthy intestinal lining is one of the most important things that you can do for your immune system. Some recent studies have shown that up to 90% of your immune system strength comes from having a healthy intestinal tract.
Your intestines are truly amazing! They produce vitamin B in abundance. They protect you from invading organisms. They communicate with the rest of your body concerning emotions, digestion and, of course, your immunity.
So, what can you do to improve your intestines and as a result improve your immune system?
Some people’s typical eating patterns are high in sugar, artificial sweeteners, unhealthy fats, and are lacking in fruits and vegetables. This unhealthy eating pattern has spread around the world. These eating habits fail to supply the body with adequate nutrition to truly support immunity.
Numerous studies have found that vitamins and minerals improve immune function. In addition, restricting unhealthy dietary fat is critical for building resistance because these fats diminish your body’s natural defenses against infection.
Excellent food sources of immune boosting nutrients include:
- Vibrant green, red and orange vegetables
- Delicious nuts and seeds
- Fresh seafood
- Whole eggs
- Fresh herbs, such as basil and cilantro add robust flavor to recipes and also add their own infection-fighting properties
Probiotics also help to improve the immune system by making your intestinal wall healthier. Practically everyone needs probiotics. These are the friendly bacteria that make your digestion better, help constipation and diarrhea, and also make your immune system stronger.
The reason everyone needs these good little helpful bacteria is that almost everyone eats meat of some sort. (Even if you don’t, vegetarians have their own problems.) Almost all meat that is raised in America is raised with antibiotics. This means that most of the meat that you eat has some amount of antibiotics in it. When you eat this meat the trace amounts of antibiotics kill off some of the good bacteria. And with all the meat that many of us eat, there isn’t much of the good bacteria left.
