Does the quality of your meat matter?
This is what I had to eat last night: Venison backstrap medallions with vegetables covered with an Asian sauce.
Why Do I bring this up?
The reason is that it so important to make sure that you are eating good quality meat. When I say good quality, I mean meat that is normal in omega-3, omega-6 balances. This is where free range, ocean caught, or hunted meat is so valuable. Most meat that you purchase in the store is obviously from some sort of animal that has been raised on a farm. Because of economics, it is much more inexpensive to feed animal some sort of grain based diet. Grains put weight on the animals quickly and therefore, the animals can go to market faster and give the farmer a better profit margin.
However, this comes with a price for us the consumer and that is that the grains provide a diet rich in omega-6 fatty acids for the animal which is in turn passed to the humans who consume their meat. This goes for not only chicken, beef, and pork, but also fish that are raised on a farm. Fish are particularly bad about having an amount of arachidonic acid in their flesh. This is because fish, particularly tilapia, are one of the most efficient animals on the planet for turning omega-6 fatty acids into arachidonic acid, a highly inflammatory chemical that is not part of the metabolism process, but only in small amounts. Arachidonic acid has a whole host of inflammatory side effects that can cause problems with heart disease, diabetes, liver problems, stroke, as well as arthritis pain and fibromyalgia.
If you cannot go with meat that is free range organic, consider taking up hunting and having it processed. This is one of the least expensive options for putting good quality meat on your table.
