How Low Level Laser Therapy works
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has a photochemical effect (like photosynthesis in plants). One of the main mechanisms of action occurs in the mitochondria (the cellular power plant inside every one of your bodies cells). The effect of Laser Therapy depends on the application of the correct wavelength and density of light, delivered to the target tissues for an appropriate period of time (sometimes it is even affective in as little as 30 - 60 seconds).
Pulses can improve tissue repair and anti-inflammatory effect; pain relief is best achieved with a continuous beam. Fortunately we have the ability to perform both types of LLLT at Arkansas Physical Health & Rehab.
Tissue Repair and Anti-inflammatory Effects
When cells get stressed (due to disease, injury or aging) the mitochondria (the power plant of your cells) can’t produce enough energy for healing. When cells are under stress it eventually leads to inflammation and cell death.
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) of the correct wavelength and density allows your cells to produce ATP, the bodies energy. When ATP is restored and stress is reduced. Once normal mitochondrial function is restored to your cells by LLLT then cell metabolism is improved, and you get better more quickly.
The effects of LLLT can't be felt. Hot lasers in the medical world are used for surgical precision while cold lasers аre used for healing precision. During treatment of your tissue with the laser therapy, an interaction between cells and photons takes place. Photons from the laser affect the tissue at the cellular level. The laser enters the tissue and promotes healing of that tissue.
The laser is absorbed at the cellular level into the mitochondria of the cell creating changes such as:
1. Rapid cell growth. The laser accelerates cellular reproduction and growth.
2. Faster wound healing. The laser stimulates fibroblast development in damaged tissue. The reduction in recovery time is an important consideration.
3. Increased metabolic activity.
4. Helps the body increase output of specific enzymes,
5. Greater oxygen to blood cells
6. More effective immune response
7. Reduced fibrous tissue formation.
8. The laser reduces the formation of scar tissue following tissue damage from cuts, scratches, burns, or following surgery.
9. Anti-inflammatory action.
10. The laser reduces swelling caused by bruising or inflammation of joints to give improved joint mobility.
11. Increased vascular activity.
12. The laser stimulates lymph and blood circulation, to allow the affected tissue to have the best possible circulation.
13. Stimulated nerve function. Slow recovery of nerve function in damaged tissue can result in "dead" limbs or numb areas.
14. Laser will speed the process of nerve cell reconnection to bring the numb areas back to life.
15. Laser therapy also increases the amplitude of action potentials to optimize muscle action.
The energy transferred to the cell can increase its kinetic energy, and activate or deactivate enzymes or alter physical or chemical properties of the cells. The mitochondria are the "Powerhouse" of the cells and make ATP which is needed for the life enhancement process of every cell.
Research has shown that the cells of your body actually communicate with each other through coherent light, (kind of like Laser Light) thus, the reason the Laser has such a positive effect on the body. When a tissue becomes diseased or injured, the metabolism of the cell is decreased, the laser creates an increase in metabolism and cell communication immediately. What is a Laser?
LASER is an acronym which stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The energy generated by the laser is in or near the optical portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (see Figure 1). Energy is amplified to extremely high intensity by an atomic process called stimulated emission. The term "radiation" is often misinterpreted because the term is also used to describe radioactive materials or ionizing radiation. The use of the word in this context, however, refers to an energy transfer. Energy moves from one location to another by conduction, convection, and radiation. The color of laser light is normally expressed in terms of the laser's wavelength. The most common unit used in expressing a laser's wavelength is a nanometer (nm). There are one billion nanometers in one meter.
The optical spectrum. Laser light is non-ionizing and ranges from the ultra-violet (100 - 400nm), visible (400 - 700nm), and infrared (700nm - 1mm).
Is it safe?
Research studies, along with an understanding of the hazards of sunlight and conventional, man-made light sources have permitted scientists to establish safe exposure limits for nearly all types of laser radiation. These limits are generally referred to as Maximum Permissible Exposures (MPE's) by laser safety professionals. In many cases it is unnecessary to make use of MPE's directly. The experience gained through millions of hours of laser use in the laboratory and industry has permitted the development of a system of laser hazard categories or classifications. The manufacturer of lasers and laser products is required to certify that the laser is designated as one of four general classes, or risk categories, and label it accordingly. This allows the use of standardized safety measures to reduce or eliminate accidents depending on the class of the laser or laser system being used.
